You’ve heard it a thousand times: Don’t wash your hair so often. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy to do if you want to be a contributing member of society. Dry shampoos can be gross, leave hair with a white cast, and make it feel even dirtier.
I used to wash my hair every day because of this. Now that I’ve found a solution, shampoos are down to like once a week. Stop cringing. It’s saved my hair. My secret weapon: one ingredient that comes straight from the earth… Bentonite Clay. It’s a mineral that sops up oil like no other.
Bentonite Clay also happens to be weirdly cheap in bulk from Whole Foods, at $1 per ounce.
Here’s what to do:
- Grab a big fluffy powder brush, I like this one from Real Techniques.
- Dip the brush in a tiny amount of powder and dab off the excess — start with a teensy amount to see how you like it
- Part hair and apply the powder on your scalp
- Let it sit for a few minutes
- Shake it out
One of the BEST parts of this trick is the massive volume you’ll get.
You can officially be done reading now. But if you’re bored and like hearing me ramble for some reason, then stick with me…
The other reason this clay is j’amazing is because it’s non-toxic. Dry shampoos usually contain nasty ingredients that can clog pores, can inhibit hair growth, and get absorbed into your scalp. Boo and gross.
Also, I have read posts proclaiming the benefits of ingesting the clay for its detox benefits. NO – don’t do that! Yes, it comes from the earth, but so does arsenic. Wtf. Keep it on your body, not in your belly.
Other clever uses for bentonite: grab the same powder brush, and with the teensiest amount of powder, set your makeup. You’ll be shine-free all day. Or, to shrink and clean-out pores, mix the clay with a few splashes of apple cider vinegar using a non-metal spoon, and apply it as a face mask. Rinse once dry. Keep this between us, but I do this mask on Husb and it makes a huge difference.
That’s all I got. My final gift to you is this monkey getting his hair brushed. You’re welcome.
